10 ways to cut down your risk of having cancer

Hi everyone,
Today is World Cancer Day. In view of that, here are 10 ways to cut down you risk of getting cancer.

1.Get physically active exercise. The recommended amount of exercise is about 30 - 45 minutes daily. For at least 5 days in a week. But, exercise according to what your body can handle or get tips from a fitness instructor or physician.

2. Watch your weight: ideally, keep your BMI between 20 and 25.

3. Sugar and fat are bad for you. So quit or cut down on the sodas/ processed juices. Keep an eye out for the sugar content of your food and drinks.

4. Red meat is not your best friend buddy!!! Keep it to a bare minimum or switch to white meat. If you can handle it, try being a vegetarian for a while. However, most people in developing countries do not have enough meat in their regular diet so, this may not apply to them. This is for those who if left to their own devices, can eat a whole horse.

5. Fruits, veggies and fibre all the way!

6. Cut down on alcohol. A risk factor for some cancers of the mouth and throat, drinking less is a smart way to reduce your risk.

7. Eat less salt. Be mindful of what you add yourself, but also of the salt content of staples like bread, spreads and meat products. Hidden salt is a major source in our diet.

8. AVOID FOOD SUPPLEMENTS!!! I can't say this enough to my African friends who are adopting this new fad. If you eat healthy, you don't need supplements, except you are pregnant or on treatment for some condition.

9. Breastfeeding is best, if you can. Breastfeeding reduces your risks of some cancer types and is in line with the public health recommendations of most nations.

10. I wish you all a cancer free life. Some day, we will win this battle.
